Applicant Qualifications
For international students: Please be advised that we typically do not review or accept international applicants. We are able to consider only international applicants who have fellowships that can support their graduate education on a case by case basis. Please contact us in advance to discuss your eligibility.
The IBS PhD programs are among the most competitive at GW; we receive about 300 applications each year for ~10 spots in the incoming class. We highly suggest reviewing our Preparation for Graduate Study page for information on ways to develop your qualifications prior to application. In order to be considered to advance to the interview phase of the admissions process, applicants must:
- be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- have at least 1 year of relevant hypothesis-driven research experience in a biomedical research lab (particularly with related achievements such as publications, presentations and awards)
- have an undergraduate record of academic excellence (minimum GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) in a life science-related major (typically Biology or similar i.e. Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology/Immunology or Neuroscience)
Applicants who do not meet the above criteria are unlikely to advance past the application stage of the process. Examples of activities that do not meet our criteria are:
- Clinical degrees and training (particularly medical degrees from overseas institutions)
- Diagnostic lab testing work (i.e. Labcorp, Quest Diagnostics, PCR testing)
- Clinical, public health, and healthcare administration work (such as medical scribe, contact tracing, or clinical trial administration)
- Master's degree coursework
- Undergraduate majors that are not closely associated with the life sciences
The IBS PhD programs are designed to meet the academic and professional development needs of early-career scientists. Individuals in mid- to late-career stages are advised to consider the PhD program in Translational Health Sciences which is more tailored to their advancement needs.
Recent Matriculants
In recent years, students in our incoming classes averaged a 3.5 undergraduate GPA, 2 years of hypothesis-driven biomedical research, and 2 publications associated with their research activities.
Application Requirements Summary

- Transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended (unofficial are acceptable for the application)

- Personal Statement (250-500 words)
- 3 Letters of Recommendation
- 3 Short Response Answers (1-2 paragraphs each)
- Selected applicants advance to a required personal interview in early Spring

Application Preparation Guidelines
- Consider attending a recruiting event to speak with an IBS representative about our PhD programs and address any questions you may have.
- Review the FAQs for IBS Admissions and CCAS Admissions.
- Applications for the IBS PhD programs are processed by GW's Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. All information must be sent to the CCAS admissions office. Do not send any application materials to the IBS office as this will delay processing of your submission.
- In addition to outstanding academic performance in undergraduate coursework (particularly in science-related disciplines), the most important factor that we consider when evaluating applications is professional experience in a biomedical research laboratory, and associated activities such as published papers, presentations, awards etc. related to lab projects. The quality of an applicant's research experience and potential for independence is paramount. We are seeking students who have demonstrated extraordinary curiosity, tenacity, collaboration and resourcefulness in solving biomedical research questions thus far. We screen application materials for evidence of rigorous and original scientific thought, deep understanding of and contributions to research project direction in previous lab experiences, and the ability to go beyond following instructions and performing technical skills to demonstrate increasing ownership over project components.
- You should communicate this in your CV/resume, personal statement, and 3 short answer responses. You should also use them to explain your future professional goals and aspirations, how your research experience has prepared you to achieve them, and how a PhD from the IBS will help you reach them.
- Your personal statement should describe your research experience, aspirations and specific interest in the IBS in a compelling manner. Our reviewers are looking for candidates with excellent potential to contribute to our particular faculty areas of research.
- You should attach your 3 short responses as a single document. The prompts are:
- Research experiences shape an interest in the biomedical PhD and a career in science. Please describe your current or previous research experiences, including any role in designing, performing or reporting a study. What did you learn about yourself in completing this experience?
- Please identify three GW IBS faculty trainers and describe your interest in their research programs.
- Doctoral study involves both self-motivation and resilience. Give an example of a time you faced a serious obstacle or failure, and how you handled it.
- The IBS requires three letters of recommendation - these are a key component of the application that are given careful consideration by our faculty reviewers. They are most useful if they are written by individuals familiar with your scientific research experience, and address 1) your knowledge and curiosity, 2) your drive and motivation in the lab, 3) your technical and analytic skills, 4) your potential for independence in driving research projects, and 5) your teamwork strengths. You must supply the names and email addresses in the recommendations section of the application in order for them to submit their letter. You should provide each of your recommenders with our LOR guidelines.
- We do not require specific prerequisite coursework, but the application does ask Yes/No questions related to coursework in Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry and Statistics. These questions are not used as elimination criteria but rather are helpful preparation for the topics that IBS students encounter in their coursework and research activities.
- After the December 1 deadline passes, selected applicants are invited to visit our program for interview at our expense in early Spring (Jan-March). The visit allows you to meet and interview with faculty mentors, meet current graduate students, and experience life at GW.
- Note that we do not require GRE test scores for our application (nor do we consider them if sent to us).

You will need to create an account in the portal (and then verify it). Once you have verified your account, you may log in and select Start New Application. Most of the fields in the application are self-explanatory. However, here are a few items of note:

- Program: Apply to only one of the five IBS programs listed above
- Degree: PhD (the IBS only offers the PhD degree)
- Campus: Main Campus
- Term: Fall 2027 (the IBS offers admission for the Fall semester only)
- In the Funding section, please select Yes for the “Do you want to be considered for GW school-based funding?” option unless you have an independent fellowship to support your PhD. All admitted IBS students (U.S. citizens and permanent residents only) receive year-round funding for the duration of the PhD including stipend, tuition and health insurance provided they make continuous good progress towards their degree.
